A RESIDENT of Tamavua-i-Wai charged with raping a 25-year-old man while both were cell mates with others at the Totogo Police Station in Suva will take a plea on May 4.

The 42-year-old man is charged with one count of digital and oral rape, alleged to have been committed on the evening of December 5, 2025.

It is alleged that both men were arrested and remanded at the police station, and that both have pending matters before the Suva Magistrate’s Court.

The allegations stated that while in the cell, the accused instructed other cell mates to look away before sexually assaulting the victim.

A police officer on duty later observed the victim sitting in a corner, where he reportedly informed him of the incident. A report was subsequently lodged.

When the case was last called on March 23 this year, the accused, who is self-employed, was found fit to enter a plea, according to his psychiatric report.

However, on the same day, Justice Daniel Goundar referred the accused back to St Giles Hospital for further treatment to assist with his recovery, due to his history of self-induced use of illegal substances.

The Legal Aid Commission is acting for the accused, who is further remanded in custody.
