POLICE are investigating mysterious floating objects suspected of being used to transport drugs, which have been drifting between Vatu and Nagasauva villages in Tawake, Cakaudrove.
This was confirmed by the Fiji Police Force spokesperson Wame Boutolu while responding to queries from this newspaper.
“Investigation continues,” Mr Boutolu said.
He did not reveal any details about the items found, nor the video uploaded on a public forum Facebook page, which has gained hundreds of reactions.
The items were carried by nets attached to tightly closed PVC pipes, some of which were powered by small solar panels and fitted with GPS-like gadgets.
Many of the objects are barely visible, especially at night, posing serious risks to boats and mariners. In a video uploaded on Facebook, a public page called First Light Production said these items have been found floating numerous times in Labasa.
“Some are easy to see, but many float almost invisibly. Boats travelling at night could easily hit them.”
First Light Inn have issued warnings to all boat captains navigating the Ucunipotu waters, urging vigilance and caution.
“We were just making our way back from Savusavu when we found visible items floating in the sea.
“Warnings to mariners and boat captains along the Ucunipotu waters on such floating items like this which can cause boat accidents out at sea.”
The Fiji Police have launched an investigation into the floating material.
Residents are asked to report any suspicious floating objects to local authorities immediately.
