Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry has called on the Government to prioritise the hardships faced by Fijians over what he describes as political manoeuvres to rush through constitutional amendments.
In his Diwali message, Mr Chaudhry said this year’s celebrations came amid political uncertainty and severe drought conditions affecting communities across the country.
“This Diwali comes at a time when we are passing through political turbulence created by a rushed and controversial constitution amendment process on the one hand, and a crippling drought on the other,” he said.
“In such a situation, alleviating the hardship of the people must take precedence over the political manoeuvres to hurriedly impose an unpopular constitution on the nation.”
Mr Chaudhry urged Fijians to reject division and strengthen national unity, saying political differences should not undermine the country’s progress.
“This Diwali, let us look beyond the barriers that divide us. Let us stand tall as proud Fijians, reject the politics of division, and unite to dismantle the walls that hinder our true national progress,” he said.
“True progress will elude us as long as political convenience is allowed to fracture our society.”
Mr Chaudhry said Diwali had transcended religious boundaries over more than a century to become an important national celebration in Fiji.
He said the festival brought together people of different ethnicities and backgrounds to share sweets, light their homes and celebrate the country’s cultural diversity.
“Our multi-ethnic unity during these festivals has always been Fiji’s greatest strength,” he said.
Mr Chaudhry also urged families to exercise caution during Diwali celebrations because of the prevailing dry weather and drought conditions.
“Please exercise caution with fireworks and open flames around dry areas to keep our families and communities safe,” he said.
He encouraged Fijians to embrace the spirit of unity, equality and prosperity symbolised by the Festival of Lights.
“Let the light of the diyas ignite a renewed spirit of oneness, equality, and prosperity for all,” he said.
Mr Chaudhry extended his Diwali greetings to all Fijians, wishing them a peaceful celebration with their loved ones.
“May Lord Ram’s blessings be upon us all.”
