At 26, Second Lieutenant Akuila Vute has already achieved a milestone in Fiji’s military history, becoming the first Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) officer to graduate from the United States Marine Corps Basic School.

The son of Vilimoni Vute of Lawaki, Kadavu, Akuila’s achievement reflects years of discipline, academic preparation and a commitment to service.

His military journey gained early recognition in December 2025, when, as an officer cadet, he received two awards at the RFMF Basic Recruit Course passing-out parade: Best Platoon in Drill and Best All-Around in the Field.

As a platoon commander, he was responsible for guiding young recruits, a demanding role that tested his leadership and ability to instil discipline.

Akuila was the first member of his family to join the RFMF.

Raised in the village, he attended Lomaivuna Secondary School before pursuing studies in Management, Public Administration and Accounting at the University of the South Pacific.

At the time of his recruit training graduation, he had six units remaining in his university program which he aims to complete.

His subsequent training at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, marked a significant step in the RFMF’s international military engagement.

Akuila completed the academic requirements for the United States Marine Corps Basic School and received his badge on October 22, 2026, before graduating the following day.

The achievement places him in a historic position within Fiji’s military, reflecting the opportunities for professional development through international defence partnerships.

The young officer’s journey also offers an example to aspiring military leaders that leadership is built through responsibility, discipline and service, rather than rank alone.
