To finally step up to the main dais, clad in her smart nautical uniform, to receive her qualification from the nation’s deputy prime minister, was a testament to the resilience, determination and courage that defines the life of Joana Takalaulala Dreunimolea.
Last week, the young mother-to-be proudly walked across the graduation stage eight months pregnant to receive her Diploma in Marine Engineering, drawing admiration and applause from fellow graduates, lecturers and family members alike.
Her achievement comes as the world marked the International Day for Women in Maritime yesterday, a global observance recognising the contributions of women and girls in the maritime industry and promoting gender equality in a sector traditionally dominated by men.
This year’s theme, “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence”, reflects the growing push to create more inclusive opportunities for women pursuing maritime careers.
Ms Dreunimolea was among five trailblazing women who graduated from the Marine Engineering and Nautical Science programs at FNU’s Pacific Centre for Maritime Studies, which is a milestone celebrated by the university as a sign of progress for women in the industry.
But for Ms Dreunimolea, the road to graduation was far from easy.
Balancing demanding coursework, practical training and the physical challenges of pregnancy required immense discipline and perseverance. Yet she remained focused on her dream of building a future in marine engineering, refusing to allow obstacles to stand in her way.
Her inspiring moment on graduation day quickly became a symbol of strength and determination, highlighting the growing presence of women in maritime education and the wider industry.
FNU as a premier tertiary institution affirmed that it remains committed to providing a safe and inclusive learning environment for female cadets while encouraging more young women to consider careers at sea.
The powerful message behind Ms Dreunimolea’s achievement is that no challenge is too great when driven by passion, purpose and the determination to succeed.
