The Fijian Parliament will meet virtually in the foreseeable future to ensure adherence to the health and safety protocols in place nationwide.
This, according to Speaker of Parliament Ratu Epeli Nailatikau during his opening address yesterday.
Members of Parliament living within the Suva containment zone attended in person while other MPs connected virtually from their homes.
“Parliament will continue to meet in order to carry out its oversight, supply and law-making functions,” he said.
Ratu Epeli said for the purposes of the Standing Orders, a member was regarded as present, including for a quorum and voting.
“Like in all proceedings, voting will be required and in taking account of the legal procedural and technical considerations, the Parliament will continue with the vote by acclamation as has been the case since March 2020.”
He said given the changeable nature of the pandemic, the business committee would continue to review these measures and decide accordingly.
