Two things dominate Timaleti Nabulu’s thoughts.

One is the severe hardship her family is facing because of job losses caused by COVID-19, and the other is the very real threat the virus poses to her family.

Ms Nabulu lives at Wailea settlement in Vatuwaqa, Suva with her husband, a former security guard who is now unemployed.

“I have a daughter who was working but she isn’t at the moment so we have a lot of problems with money and getting food, especially now with COVID-19,” she said.

“I have a son in Kadavu, he’s a teacher, he helps from time to time but he has a family of his own now.”

Ms Nabulu said fear of what COVID-19 could do to her family was keeping her up at night.

“We’ve heard the news from India and Brazil, the massive numbers of deaths – what if we have a similar situation like that, what will we do?

“I think about what we would do if the lockdown was extended another four or five weeks, what will the future look like because at the moment the Government is able to give us a little bit of assistance but what if the pandemic goes on longer, what will it come to?”
