Sixty-three-year-old Vinod Kumar of Lomawai in Nadroga says he will only hire fully vaccinated labourers for the 2021 crushing season.
Mr Kumar said he would start harvesting almost 10 acres of sugar cane later this month after his labourers from Tailevu were fully vaccinated.
“I’m fully vaccinated. The rest of my family is fully vaccinated,” he said.
“So I think it’s important that everyone that works on my farm is fully vaccinated too.”
He said this year he would be down a few workers because of the current COVID crisis but he would ensure harvesting of the crop begins as soon as possible.
“This year I will help out with the cutting because we won’t have all of my labourers.
Some of them will not be able to travel across because they are in the red zone and some are not fully vaccinated.
“Most of the farmers in my sector are fully vaccinated and we want our people to be vaccinated too.”
