THIS is our only chance.

Deputy Prime Minister and SODELPA Parliamentary leader Viliame Gavoka has reaffirmed his stand to support the passing of the Constitutional Amendment Bill 32 that will be tabled in Parliament next week.

Mr Gavoka doubled down on his support for Government’s efforts to amend the 2013 Constitution yesterday while acknowledging his party’s reservations and refusal to support the draft legislation.

He said as a result the Parliamentary Special Committee will engage with his party to “thrash out” issues that need clarity and inclusion in the proposed Bill 32.

“Indeed the Parliamentary Special Committee to Consider Amending the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, (Bill No.32 of 2026) values the contributions from SODELPA and will engage with SODELPA to thrash out issues that need clarity and inclusion in the Bill,” Mr Gavoka told this newspaper.

“As understood, this is our only chance to change the 2013 Constitution as demanded by many.

“We cannot rely on anyone else or to kick the can down the street, so to speak we have the opportunity to do it now hence the energy being applied to the task.”

Yesterday, Mr Gavoka rejoined his Parliamentary Standing Committee counterparts to hear submissions from RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai.

Earlier this week the Deputy PM said he was devastated by the party’s decision not to support the proposed Bill.
