Sacrifice is revered as an admirable trait, only thought to be possessed by the old and wise.

However, for Raijeli Saubulinayau,a bartender whose path to success has been paved with challenges, triumphs and a steadfast commitment to family, sacrifice was a family-taught habit. Raised in a bustling household with numerous siblings, Ms Saubulinayau’s childhood was filled with the love and support of her hardworking parents.

“Growing up I would watch as my mum and dad worked really hard,” Ms Saubulinayau says.

“And for me, at that time, I understood because my mum had been through a lot and the lessons she learnt she tried her best to instil them in us.”

Ms Saubulinayau attended Saint Joseph Secondary School where the foundation for her academic journey was laid. It was during her time at the Fiji Latter DaySaint (LDS) College, however, that Raijeli experienced a profound shift in perspective.

“I can proudly say that LDS really opened my eyes, and I had the genuine high school experience. For that I am extremely grateful,” she says.

Embracing the positive environment and supportive friendships at LDS, she found solace fromthe negativity and trauma that had plagued her previous educational experiences.

Despite the hardships her family faced, including the passing of her father two years ago and her mother’s relocation to Australia for work, Ms Saubulinayau remained steadfast in her commitment to her siblings.

With unwavering determination, she took on the responsibility of caring for her family, remaining in their family home in Raiwaqa and working tirelessly to provide for their needs.

After completing high school, she ventured into the workforce, exploring various roles from hands-on jobs to cashier positions.

However, it was her unexpected foray into bartending at the Top Dog Bar that truly ignited her passion and opened doors to new opportunities. Initially unfamiliar with the worldof mixology, Ms Saubulinayau embraced the challenges with enthusiasm, finding joy in the art of bartending and the connections forged with patrons.

“I never imagined myself doing something like this,” she says. “In high school, I wanted to become a lawyeror, at least, I saw myself working inan offi ce. Never did I imagine I would be working in a bar.

“And it surprised me, I had no prior knowledge of anything alcohol related, and I reallymade meaningful connections.

“Now I’m here, I don’t want to go. I feel so comfortable here, andI feel likeI learnt so much here than Ihadin any other job I did.”

For Ms Saubulinayaubar tending transcends mere cocktail crafting; it’s about forging meaningful connections and expanding hernetwork.

Through her work, she has encountered a diverse array of individuals, from business

leadersto fellow bartenders, each contributing to her personal and professional growth. Reflecting on her journey, she marvels at the transformation she has undergone.

“I now know people who I believe will be there for me when I need it,” Ms Saubulinayau says.

“Compared to two years ago or even last year, I know so many good people, from business people to people who work for the government, youname it.

“My mum, VikaMotufaga, Ilook up to her,” says Reijeli, “I could say I’ve been through stuff, but it’s nothing compared to the experiences and trialsmy mother endured, and I commend herforthat.

“She always encourages me to be an air hostess or flight agent or something like that, but I am happy right where I am.

“I won’t bedoing this for the rest of my life, but the lessons I learn here will definitely be part of me forever.”

Amidst the clinking of glasses andlaughter of patrons, Ms Saubulinayau stands as a beacon of resilience and determination.

Her journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of perseverance, resilience, and unwavering commitment to family.

As she continues to navigate life’s twists and turns, her indomitable spirit shines brightly, inspiring others to pursue their dreams with courage and conviction.
