Many people in the Northern Division are unaware of their rights despite the existence of the Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission for the past 27 years, says Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.

He made the remarks yesterday while opening the commission’s new office at Sangam Ave in Labasa.

Ratu Wiliame said human rights were frequently discussed in communities, the media and on social media, but greater public awareness was still needed.

He said the commission’s presence in Labasa would help educate and empower northern communities about their rights and responsibilities.

One of its commissioners, Chantelle Khan said the new office would make services more accessible, eliminating the need for residents to travel long distances.

She said the office would provide a safe space for people to raise concerns, seek information and better understand their rights, while reinforcing the commission’s commitment to dignity, equality, justice, inclusion and respect for all.
