TEAM Fiji deputy chef de mission Wayne O’Connor will fly 752 miles north-east of Rio de Janeiro to Salvador, carrying with him the best wishes of Team Fiji when our national football team play their first match against World Cup semi-finalists Korea.
The admin team are now preparing O’Connor with his airline and accommodation requirements to be able to watch Frank Farina’s 17-member team in action in their inaugural Olympics match on August 4.
Chef de mission Cathy Wong said they were in daily contact with the football team billeted at the Gran Hotel Stella Maris Resort in Salvador.
“We are in contact with our football team to make sure they don’t have any hiccups wherever they are,” Wong said.
“We want to make sure all Wayne’s preparation plan is ready, the airline is booked, accommodation is done and anything that needs to go down from here.
“And also to send with Wayne our well wishes to the football team down in Salvador.”
In the meantime, the Team Fiji executive are now anticipating phase two when the men’s and women’s rugby teams arrive at the Olympic Village “as one big family”.
“My role then is just to make sure that all the boxes are ticked, and any major issues or minor issues that come up, we’ll take care of it, we’ll settle it for the managers and the officials.
“Really just to keep the comradeship and keep the team bonding strong within the team, keep them focused and help them stay focused on what they are supposed to do.”
