SUGAR imported from New Zealand has arrived in Fiji and is already being distributed to retailers as the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) works to ease shortages that have left supermarket shelves short of supplies.
In a statement, FSC said additional shipments from Thailand were expected throughout August and the coming months to supplement local production and maintain adequate supplies.
The corporation said the shortage was caused by an unforeseen delay to the start of the 2026 crushing season, which placed pressure on domestic sugar stocks. To manage limited supplies, FSC introduced temporary rationing to ensure sugar remained available across the country.
FSC said the situation was steadily improving, with all three mills now operating after the Lautoka Mill began crushing on July 14.
As production increases, sugar bagging has resumed and fresh stocks are being dispatched to retailers. Consumers should expect supplies to gradually return to supermarket shelves over the coming weeks.
FSC said it had made significant progress in clearing outstanding orders, with the current backlog for retail-pack sugar standing at about 65 tonnes, which it expects to clear by the end of this week. June orders for 25-kilogram bags have already been fulfilled, with deliveries now being made against current orders.
