THE Government has assured Fiji’s 42,000 civil servants that their salaries will not be reduced despite ongoing expenditure restraint measures outlined in the 2026-2027 National Budget.
Presenting the Budget yesterday, Minister for Finance Esrom Immanuel said the Government had deliberately protected the incomes of public servants in recognition of the essential services they provide across the country.
“There will be no reduction in civil service salaries,” Mr Immanuel declared.
“We recognise the important role played by teachers, nurses, doctors, police officers, military personnel and public servants in delivering essential services to our people.”
Mr Immanuel said the public service remained the backbone of Government service delivery, with its workforce supporting hundreds of thousands of Fijians.
“Around 42,000 public servants directly support more than 200,000 livelihoods across Fiji. While Government has implemented expenditure restraint measures across the public sector, we have deliberately chosen not to reduce the salaries of our civil servants.”
Instead, Mr Immanuel said the Government had strengthened the public service over the past three years through better pay, greater job security and improved employment conditions.
“Over the last three years, civil servants have received salary increases ranging from 10 per cent to 23 per cent, representing an additional annual investment of $115million after salaries had remained largely stagnant since 2017.”
Mr Immanuel said the Government remained committed to supporting frontline workers while maintaining fiscal discipline.
