Fiji Intelligence Unit director Razim Buksh said they do not get a feedback from law enforcement agencies on cases the FIU refers to them.
He made the comment during the Standing Committee on Economic Affairs review of the FIU’s 2021-2022 Annual Report last week.
“I want to under the effectiveness of FIU, I want to understand that what you are collecting, all this information, where are they being disposed and the people who are involved in such activity are taken to task,” asked Committee member, Premila Kumar.
“How many cases have been filed with law enforcement and do you get feedback from the law enforce agency. Because it’s no point just referring things to law enforcement agency when actions are not taken.”
Mr Buksh said FIU was “administrative” body and was the anti-money laundering regulator and acted as traditional intelligence agency.
“In terms of the feedback, we would love feedback from our law enforcement agencies,” he said.
“One of the gaps I have identified is the absence of, to a large extent the feedback that we get from the law enforcement partners.”
Committee member Sashi Kiran asked Mr Buksh that FIU submitted 500 suspicious disseminations to law enforcement in 2022.
“You don’t get a feedback. Is there any analysis available on that,” asked Ms Kiran.
“No – in some cases we get a feedback when they need further information,” replied Mr Buksh.
