National Fire Authority chief executive officer Puamau Sowane has dismissed public claims that fire trucks have been responding to emergencies without water.

Responding to complaints raised by members of the public, Mr Sowane said strict procedures were in place to ensure all fire trucks were checked and fully supplied with water before leaving the station.

“Let me assure you this, every shift that we do, every 9 o’clock in the morning when we do the shift, there is a checklist for all our people to ensure that our fire trucks are charged,” he said.

He said allegations that trucks operated without water were based on assumptions.

“We don’t run our truck without water.”

Mr Sowane said firefighters would immediately notice if a vehicle was not properly filled, including during movement and operations.

He said checks were carried out at the start of every shift to ensure water tanks were ready before any deployment, adding that crews only responded once all requirements were met.
