THE upgrading of Nausori International Airport has begun, began with a groundbreaking yesterday, supporting plans to improve facilities, better travel experiences and stronger connectivity for the people of Fiji, travellers and visitors that pass through the airport.

At the groundbreaking ceremony yesterday, Fiji Airports chief executive officer Mesake Nawari said it was a significant milestone that will transform Nausori Airport into a more modern, efficient and resilient facility.

“It is about connecting our people, supporting local economies, improving everyday travel for Fijians and pushing the tourism dollar out to the rest of Fiji,” he said.

He said Fiji Airports is committed to its long-term planning for Nausori over the next ten years, subject to development and funding.

“These plans will ensure the airport continues to support economic growth and tourism,” Mr Nawari said.

While acknowledging the Government for its support and funding, Mr Nawari said this will deliver real and lasting benefit from improved accessibility and new commercial opportunity, job creation and a more seamless passenger experience through modern technology.

Minister for Public Enterprises, Multi-Ethnic affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts, Charan Jeath Singh said the project at Nausori builds upon earlier strategic investments, including a $64 million runway extension project that laid the foundation for expanded capacity and enabled full load Boeing 737 operations.

He said once completed, the new terminal will transform Nausori Airport into a modern, efficient and passenger-focused facility aligned with international standards.

“It will deliver expanded departure and arrival areas, modern check-in and security facilities, improved baggage handling systems and comfortable, air-conditioned passenger spaces designed to enhance the travel experience,” he said.

He said passengers will benefit from improved amenities including retail and food outlets, upgraded restrooms, better accessibility for persons living with disabilities and modern technology systems that support efficient operations and real-time communication.

“At the same time, the design will improve operational efficiency by optimising passenger flow, strengthening airline and ground-handling operations and ensuring seamless integration between landside and airside facilities,” Mr Singh said.
