Government is exploring the possibility of introducing a national identification card for Fijians.
A statement released by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated this was one of the topics discussed during this week’s Cabinet meeting.
Mr Rabuka said Cabinet endorsed the implementation of the National Digital Identification (ID) Program.
“The first phase will see the introduction of electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) by the Reserve Bank of Fiji,” he said.
The PM said the eKYC was a modern process which simplified customer verification by allowing businesses to verify the identity of customers electronically.
“A national ID card steering committee will be established to oversee the management, governance, legal and policy frameworks for the national ID program.”
“The Singapore Cooperation Enterprise conducted a study from 2019-2022 on the practicality and feasibility of implementing a national ID card.
