PRIME Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has thrown his full support behind the McDonald’s Fijian Drua Women as they prepare for Saturday’s Super Rugby Women’s grand final, saying he will be at the ground to cheer on the side as it bids to create more history.
Rabuka said he had closely followed the team’s campaign throughout the season and was confident the nation would rally behind the Drua.
“Well, I’ll be there to watch them. I’ve been watching most of their games,” he said.
“I wish them well, and we’re all behind them, as well as the national team, Flying Fijians wherever they’re playing.”
The Prime Minister’s endorsement comes as the Drua stand just 80 minutes away from adding another remarkable chapter to one of the greatest success stories in Super Rugby Women’s history.
The Fijian franchise took the competition by storm when it joined in 2022, winning the championship in its inaugural season before successfully defending the title in 2023 to become back-to-back champions in its first two years.
Those triumphs established the Drua as one of the competition’s powerhouse teams and showcased the quality of women’s rugby in Fiji.
The years that followed were more challenging as the Drua were unable to maintain the lofty standards they had set, missing out on another title while other teams closed the gap.
However, this season has seen a remarkable resurgence.
Victory on Saturday would see the McDonald’s Fijian Drua Women claim a third Super Rugby Women’s title.
With the backing of the Prime Minister and an expectant home crowd, the Drua will carry the hopes of a nation as they seek to reclaim the trophy.
The match kicks off at 1.05pm.
