Nation-building remains unfinished – Prasad

National Federation Party leader Professor Biman Prasad says 56 years after independence, Fiji’s nation-building journey remains unfinished, with independence needing to deliver dignity, security and opportunity for every citizen.

In his Fiji Day message, Prof Prasad said independence should ultimately mean more than Fiji having the freedom to govern itself.

“Independence must ultimately mean more than the freedom to govern ourselves. It must mean the freedom of every Fijian to live with dignity, security and opportunity, irrespective of ethnicity, religion, gender or economic circumstances,” he said.

Prof Prasad said Fiji was again going through an important and sometimes difficult period in its political and constitutional history, with differing views about the country’s future direction.

“These differences must never become a reason for division, intimidation or hostility between our communities,” he said.

“Our history has taught us the painful consequences of allowing politics to divide people along ethnic and religious lines.”

Turning to the current constitutional debate, Prof Prasad said Fiji’s Constitution belonged to its people and any changes must respect the law.

“Any effort to reshape our constitutional future must respect the law, allow meaningful public participation and proceed without unnecessary haste,” he said.

“No political leader or government should place its ambitions above the democratic rights of our citizens.”

Prof Prasad also urged Fijians not to fear the ongoing debate.

“Democracy gives us the right to question, disagree and demand accountability. We must exercise those rights peacefully, confidently and with respect for one another.”

He said constitutional issues should not overshadow the everyday challenges confronting families, including the cost of living, employment, education and healthcare.

“Our young people deserve a country in which their talents are valued, their aspirations are achievable and their future is filled with hope.”

Prof Prasad said Fiji’s strength remained its people and their ability to overcome adversity together.

“We are a nation of many cultures, traditions and faiths, but we share one country and one future.”
