NADROGA scored in the dying minutes to secure a thrilling 37-32 victory over Tailevu after a closely contested semi-final match of the Skipper Cup competition at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva yesterday.
With the scores locked at 32-32 in the closing stages, Nadroga found the decisive try through Waqa Nalaga to seal the win.
Nadroga had led 20-15 at half-time after Sefanaia Tokaduadua scored early in the first half, finding space in Tailevu’s defence to cross the tryline.
They continued their momentum after the break, with Ratu Seru Kaibau scoring early in the second half to extend their lead to 27-15.
Tailevu responded through a converted try by Osaia Seru, reducing the deficit to five points at 27-22 and keeping the contest alive.
Both teams continued to trade tries as the match entered its final stages, with Tailevu fighting back to draw level at 32-32.
However, Nadroga held their nerve under pressure, with Nalaga’s late try proving decisive as they claimed the five-point victory.
Team manager Manueli Fumanu praised the players for their determination, acknowledging the months of preparation that had gone into the team’s campaign.
“It was not an easy journey,” Fumanu said.
“I thank the boys. After months of preparation, we are able to get the victory.”
Fumanu said the team would not rest on its success, with their attention already turning to next week’s outing.
“This is not the end. We will work hard for next week’s outing,” he said.
He also thanked the supporters for standing behind the team throughout its campaign.
The final of the Skipper Cup competition will see a western rivalry clash between Nadroga and Nadi this Saturday.
