THE final pre-trial conference involving two men who allegedly murdered a Fiji-born Canadian national near Korovou in Tailevu in February last year will continue before Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull on June 19.
Salimoni Lagicere and Edward Nand are accused of killing Narend Chand during a drinking session on February 19, 2023.
It is alleged that Chand had been planning to meet a ‘female’ he was communicating with on social media but unknown to him, the female’s fake profile was administered by one of the accused.
The pair then allegedly made plans to meet and rob Chand upon his arrival in Fiji. When he arrived, they allegedly travelled with him on the pretext of meeting the woman he was communicating with.
His body was later found floating in the Waimaro River near Waito Settlement in Tailevu.
Their lawyers — Sunil Gosai for Mr Nand and Loqi Cati for Mr Lagicere — told the court the men were allegedly assaulted and threatened during their arrest, interview and when charges were being laid against them.
This was refuted by State lawyer Zenith Zunaid who suggested the three-hour video recorded interview of the two men be played before the court.
Meanwhile, Mr Cati from August Legal informed the Court of his intention to withdraw his services as lawyer for Mr Lagicere however, Justice Bull will make a decision on the next date since it was a last-minute request before trial commenced.
Justice Bull reminded both parties the case was nearly two years old and there would be dire consequences if trial was vacated.
Mr Nand’s bail was extended and a production order was made for Mr Lagicere is in remand.
