The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji says respectful communication, professionalism and practical assistance must remain a priority following public criticism over an incident at an MSAF-managed wharf.

In a statement, MSAF acknowledged concerns raised on social media regarding access restrictions and the handling of equipment at one of its facilities.

Boat owner Chute William George had criticised the treatment he received at the MSAF wharf claiming he and another man, both elderly were told to carry a heavy generator around a gate and physically lift it onto the wharf themselves after being denied vehicle access.

In a social media post, George said the response from a civil servant showed little regard for safety, common sense or customer service.

MSAF said it understood the frustration expressed by those involved and stressed that while safety and security procedures must always be followed, staff are also expected to treat members of the public respectfully.

“While safety and security procedures at maritime facilities must be observed at all times, MSAF also recognizes the importance of respectful communication, professionalism, and practical assistance where possible,” the Authority said.

MSAF confirmed that an internal review is now underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Authority also addressed allegations circulating online suggesting that gifts, money or favours may be expected in exchange for services or favourable treatment.

“MSAF wishes to make it absolutely clear that such conduct is strictly prohibited,” the statement said.

The Authority warned that any employee found engaging in improper conduct or accepting inducements in breach of policy could face serious disciplinary action, including dismissal for gross misconduct.

MSAF is encouraging members of the public to formally report complaints or incidents through its official channels to allow investigations and due diligence to be carried out properly.

The Authority said it remains committed to maintaining safe, secure and accessible maritime facilities while continuing efforts to improve public confidence and service delivery.
