The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) has imposed an immediate ban on all vessels under 15 metres from operating in areas affected by severe marine weather conditions, warning that rough seas and damaging swells pose a significant threat to life and property.

In a Marine Notice issued today, MSAF said the restriction was necessary due to active weather warnings issued by the Fiji Meteorological Service and was aimed at protecting lives, vessels and the marine environment.

“Severe marine weather conditions currently affecting Fiji waters present a significant risk to the safety of navigation, life at sea, and maritime property,” the authority stated.

Under the directive, all vessels measuring less than 15 metres in length are prohibited from sailing, departing, transiting or undertaking voyages in affected waters.

The restriction applies to commercial vessels, passenger vessels, fishing boats, recreational craft, small workboats and any other vessel less than 15 metres in overall length.

MSAF said the affected areas include the coastal waters of the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, southern Viti Levu from Natadola through the Coral Coast to Navua, Taveuni and nearby islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and surrounding islands.

The authority also highlighted damaging heavy swells affecting Southwest Viti Levu waters, Lau waters, the Koro Sea and the Kadavu Passage.

MSAF has directed vessel owners, operators and masters to closely monitor weather forecasts and remain alert to rapidly changing sea conditions.

“Mariners are reminded that the safety of life at sea remains paramount,” the authority said.

“Vessel masters are expected to exercise sound judgement and take all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of their vessel, passengers and crew.”

While larger vessels are not subject to the sailing ban, MSAF strongly urged operators to undertake proper risk assessments before departure and carefully consider whether voyages are necessary while adverse weather conditions persist.

The authority warned that failure to comply with the Marine Notice could result in enforcement action under applicable maritime legislation.

The restriction will remain in force until the Coastal Inundation Alert and Damaging Heavy Swell Warning issued by the Fiji Meteorological Service are cancelled or until further notice is issued by MSAF.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Sereana Lalakobau said the measure was being taken in the interest of public safety as hazardous weather conditions continue to affect Fiji waters.
