EQUAL opportunities for women in political leadership must be backed by clear targets and practical support, says Minister for Defence and Veteran Affairs Radiniceva Raluna.

Ms Raluna made the call during the 2026 Fiji Women’s Practice Parliament, urging the Government to introduce concrete measures to address barriers to women’s political participation.

She called for temporary special measures, stronger political leadership programs for women and effective protection against intimidation and discrimination.

“We are not asking for women to be elected simply because they are women,” she said.

“We are asking for a fair opportunity for qualified women to participate, to compete and to lead.”

Ms Raluna proposed temporary special measures, including quotas with clear targets and transparent implementation plans to increase women’s political representation in line with constitutional and electoral requirements.

She also called for a women’s political leadership program offering training in public speaking, parliamentary procedures, policy development, campaign planning and leadership, particularly for women in rural and maritime communities.

“The Government must move beyond promises and demonstrate measurable progress.”
