FOR 20-year-old Suliana Ilisabeta Latianara, the loss of her mother has become a source of strength and a powerful motivation to advocate for young women.
The eldest of eight siblings from Nacamaki Village on Koro, Lomaiviti, Ms Latianara also has maternal links to Baravi and Navakasiga in Bua.
Last year, she lost her mother to cancer. Since then, she has taken on greater responsibilities at home while continuing to balance her studies, work and community commitments.
A journalism student and former Teen Duavata titleholder, Suliana says her passion lies in connecting with people, amplifying voices and celebrating Fiji’s diversity.
“Losing my mum was the hardest thing but I had to step up,” she said.
“My siblings, my dad, my community — they need me. It’s not easy balancing everything, but I keep going.”
Despite the weight of responsibility, she remains committed to completing her studies and serving her community. Ms Latianara sees her experience as an opportunity to encourage other young women facing difficult circumstances.
“My story is about resilience. If I can show other young women that you can keep going through grief and still chase your dreams, then I’ve done something right.”
