Running out against the Australian Country team today will be more than just a rugby match for Shop N Save Fiji Warriors forward Breyton Legge.
It will be a profoundly personal mission to honour his grandmother, a breast cancer survivor.
In an emotional testimony, the Warriors forward shared how his grandmother fought against the disease.
“My grandmother had a few run-ins with breast cancer, and she overcame the challenges,” Legge told Fiji Rugby.
“So, it’s a big thing for me to be able to spread the awareness on early detection through this match.”
Legge also shared his family’s struggles watching his grandmother battle the illness.
“For my family, it was a really hard time … but through all that, she was able to put a smile on everyone around her. This is why I’m happy to be playing this Thursday—to honor cancer survivors and encourage those currently battling cancer to be strong through their challenge.”
He has credited his grandmother’s resilience for making a profound impact on his life, both as a young man and as a rugby player.
With the match being played also to raise awareness and funds in the fight against breast cancer, Fiji Warriors coach Cohen Politini said the team is honored to be part of the cause, and they dedicate today’s match to the fight against breast cancer.
“We are excited to support the cause. Some of the boys have been directly affected by it, with family members fighting against breast cancer. It’s so special for them to do their part in supporting Pinktober, through this game,” he said.
The much anticipated match between the Fiji Warriors and the Australian Country team will kick-off today at 2pm at Prince Charles Park in Nadi, in what promises to be a tough and thrilling encounter.
Tickets are $5 per person, and fans are urged to come out in numbers to support their teams and to contribute to the ongoing fight against breast cancer.
