Housing and Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa says they will continue to work on improving waste management systems to be more effective and discourage littering.

Mr Nalumisa said in order to prohibit and regulate the deposit of litter in the environment, the ministry would review the fines for littering.

“The ministry is working and having discussions on how best we can manage our waste,” Mr Nalumisa said.

“In order to do that, we need to look at the legislative framework and the system as well.

“If we look at the fines now, they’re very minimal, so we want to have something that will deter people from dumping waste.”

Mr Nalumisa said the ministry was working with stakeholders on the review of the legislation to reduce environmental risks and improve waste management in Fiji.

“We need to take this to Cabinet because we are looking at our alternatives, how best we can manage our waste better and, in that package, comes the review of the current legislative framework.

“We need to involve the Ministry of Environment and the Solicitor General in terms of the review of the legislation.

“It’s part of the package and this needs to be totally looked into in order for us to come up with a very practical and effective waste management system. Hopefully, this should discourage people from littering in public places.”
