A number of boat operators across the country are still operating vessels without licence, says Rural and Maritime Development Minister Mosese Bulitavu.
He said the boat master licensing training was not optional, but a mandatory legal requirement for anyone intending to operate a boat.
“It is essential that all operators obtain a valid licence through proper training before taking charge of any vessel,” Mr Bulitavu said.
While speaking to the 72 individuals, who received their boat masters licences at Nakawaga Village on Mali Island, he said no individual should be in control of a vessel without first completing the approved training program and obtaining a valid licence.
“A boat master licence is required by law for anyone operating a licensed vessel.”
He said the program was designed to ensure safety at sea and improve understanding of maritime laws and responsibilities.
“The training is designed to ensure safety at sea and proper understanding of maritime rules.”
However, he raised concerns over cases where some licensed operators are misusing their certification after completing training.
“Some licence holders have used their certification irresponsibly to engage in racing activities.”
He said such behaviour was dangerous and placed lives at risk.
“It also undermines the purpose of the licensing system and our maritime safety standards.”
He said authorities would not tolerate breaches of maritime regulations and would continue to monitor compliance closely.
