Government systems are in place to respond quickly if Fiji faces any fuel emergency, with essential services expected to continue without disruption, says Rural and Maritime Development Minister Mosese Bulitavu.
Mr Bulitavu said his ministry, together with the National Disaster Management Office, plays a key role in co-ordinating national responses during crises.
“Most of the time we are also dealing with the rural and maritime, and also the NDMO, which falls under the ministry. So it’s part of essential services,” he said.
Speaking to this newspaper, he said the government’s cluster system would be activated if needed to manage any fuel-related disruption.
“Our ministry also runs the Fiji cluster system. If we come to a situation where there is a fuel emergency, the fuel cluster system will kick in.
“That is how the system was successfully used during COVID. All operations of Government came under the ministry, especially NDMO, which falls under disaster management.”
While global fuel issues are being monitored, he said there are no immediate concerns affecting government work in Fiji.
“Mitigation measures from the Ministry of Finance would also help reduce any possible impact.”
He stressed that the ministry’s ongoing projects would not be affected.
“Everything is going very well, and the fuel crisis doesn’t affect it at all.”
On national budget announcement, he said it was still early to comment on it, but expressed hope for increased funding.
