RUNNERS up for the under-15 grade of the Fiji Secondary Schools Deans competition last year and now in the U16 grade, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial School have set a goal to reach the national quarter-finals once again this year.
This has been the aim for the Vatuwaqa-based school, after it began its Deans campaign in the Southern Zone yesterday.
In a thrilling match on round one of the Southern Zone Deans competitions, the side defeated Gospel High School 36-6 at the Suva Grammar School grounds in Veiuto, Suva.
Team captain Waisiki Ramatakubou said after the match how the team’s preparation had been going well which also led to the school’s eventual victory in the first round of the Southern Zone Deans competition.
Although the team acquired a victory, Ramatakubou says there still much room for improvement specifically on their discipline.
“Our team still needs to work on our discipline. We had one yellow card, so that’s something we need to work on,” the captain, who plays as lock, said.
The team sets their aim for the U16 Southern Zone title and as well as progressing beyond the national quarters.
“We aim to win the U16 title in the southern zones and as well s making it further beyond the national quarters. We came short in the deans final last year, so we are hoping to improve and better this year,” he said.
The captain also expressed gratitude to the parents, coaches, teachers and students for the support shown towards the team.
