The death of Sakiasi Ose Radravu has been linked to a pre-existing medical condition, according to findings from a post-mortem examination conducted on Saturday.

In a statement, Fiji Police said immediate family members were present to formally identify Mr Radravu before the examination and were later briefed on the findings.

“The cause of death has been linked to a pre-existing medical condition,” police confirmed.

Investigators have also verified that Mr Radravu was taken into custody by officers from Valelevu Police Station on the night of April 23 in connection with an alleged burglary case.

Police said he was questioned, held in custody and later released.

“It has also been confirmed from his family that no official report of an alleged assault was lodged following his arrest,” the statement said.

To ensure transparency, police have confirmed that the investigation file will be forwarded to the Resident Magistrate together with the findings and recommendations for a possible inquest.

Despite the post-mortem findings, the Fiji Police Force says it will continue its internal investigation into the conduct of 12 officers involved in the raid linked to the burglary investigation.

“The Fiji Police Force will however continue to pursue an internal investigation into the conduct of the twelve police officers involved in the raid, and failure to adhere to processes and procedures in the conduct of the investigation into the case of alleged burglary.”

A separate directive has also been issued to investigate the officers involved in Mr Radravu’s arrest and detention, as well as concerns over supervisory oversight.

Police acknowledged that failures to comply with established procedures continue to contribute to complaints against the organisation.

“The Fiji Police Force acknowledges that the lack of compliance to due processes continues to exacerbate complaints against police and service.”

As a result, the Internal Affairs Unit has been directed to strengthen oversight mechanisms and ensure that middle managers enforce compliance with operational procedures.

Police warned that supervisors who fail to carry out their responsibilities will face disciplinary action.

The case attracted public attention following allegations surrounding the circumstances of Mr Radravu’s arrest and claims of police misconduct. Authorities say investigations into the officers’ actions remain ongoing, even as medical findings indicate his death was not caused by injuries sustained during the arrest.
