After 14 years, the Pacific’s biggest media gathering returns to Fiji, with the 8th Pacific Media Summit moving beyond Suva to Savusavu.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will open the summit on September 22 at Wasawasa Lodge under the theme, ‘Reaching the Remote: Media and Digital Innovation for a Connected Blue Pacific’.

Fijian Media Association general secretary Stanley Simpson said hosting the event on Vanua Levu reflected the summit’s focus on reaching remote communities.

He said the last Fiji summit in 2012 was held under censorship, with some journalists boycotting the event.

Almost 200 media leaders, journalists, communications specialists, development partners and government officials are expected to attend.

The program will cover press freedom, media sustainability, climate and disaster reporting, artificial intelligence, public broadcasting and inclusive leadership.

Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica will represent Fiji on a high-level panel on September 23.

A Pre-COP Town Hall will also be held at Nukubalavu, alongside six workshops on digital innovation, climate, corruption, ocean reporting and inclusive media.

The summit ends on September 25 with the Savusavu Outcome Statement from FMA president Rosi Tamani-Doviverata and PINA president Kalafi Moala.
