After more than 16 years of restricted freedom, Fiji’s media can finally be free.

This was the message of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during the World Press Freedom Day celebrations yesterday.

Mr Rabuka described the day as similar to relishing the first few deep breaths of air after taking a long dive.

“We again celebrate Press Freedom Day,” he said.

“It is again a Press Freedom Day with a difference.

“It is different from last year when Fiji was uncomfortably experiencing its newfound freedom after 16 years of restricted freedom enjoyed by the government but nobody else.”

Mr Rabuka said all Fijians including taxi drivers, farmers, the rich and poor could now enjoy press freedom, the freedom of speech and expression and the freedom of choice.
