AFTER three decades of standing on its own, Matuku Island has returned to the Bose ni Vanua ni Yasana o Lau, marking a significant moment for the province as it hosted this year’s gathering in Suva yesterday.

The return of Matuku was highlighted by President Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who reflected on the importance of unity, leadership and collective action among the people of Lau.

Speaking at the opening of the Bose ni Vanua ni Yasana o Lau, Ratu Naiqama also shared a personal reflection on his journey after the 2006 coup and the support he received following his release from prison.

“A group of friends from Raiwaqa came to visit me, including the Minister for Transport then,” he said.

“They told me they wanted to present a sevusevu in celebration of my return to bring hope for the people.”

The President also highlighted discussions he recently held with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on Fiji’s maritime transport challenges and how, after spending almost 12 years in exile in Tonga, Ratu Tevita marked his return with a significant contribution to the Yasana o Lau through the presentation of a boat, the Yavirau, to support maritime transport services for the Lau group.

Ratu Naiqama said the Tui Nayau’s efforts reflected the importance of preparation and working together to address challenges facing the people.
