Adverse weather has forced the postponement of the Coca-Cola Maritime Zone athletics competition, with organisers prioritising fairness and athlete participation.

Secretary of the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association, Biu Colati, confirmed to Times Sport that the decision was made following concerns raised by school principals from the islands.

“In this game, principals call the shots,” Colati said.

“Principals from Lau called to say that the cyclone had delayed their travel arrangements.”

The impact of adverse weather condition has significantly disrupted maritime transport, leaving several teams unable to travel in time for the competition that was scheduled to take place at the HFC Bank stadium yesterday (Monday).

Colati revealed that both physical and virtual meetings were held with stakeholders to find a solution.

A revised schedule has now been agreed upon to accommodate affected schools.

The adjustment allows maritime athletes already in Suva to compete in qualifying events on Wednesday and Saturday, while those arriving later in the week will participate on Saturday.

“Our last school will be in Suva on the evening of Wednesday,” he said.

Despite the setback, the association remains committed to ensuring all athletes are given a fair opportunity to compete and qualify, with the revised dates aimed at maintaining inclusivity across the maritime schools.

Meanwhile, the Coca-Cola Games National Championship is set to take place from April 30 until May 2.
