Illegal and indiscriminate rubbish dumping, and concerns over sewer discharge into a creek in Nabua along Ratu Mara Rd have become a growing environmental and public health issue, with a resident calling for urgent government intervention.
Nabua resident Inoke Kelo, 64, said he had repeatedly complained to the Suva City Council about the polluted creek after he was informed that a sewer outlet pipe discharged into the waterway.
“I was told there is a 400mm sewer outlet pipe that empties into this creek,” he said.
During heavy rain, he said, rubbish from areas as far as Sotutu Place is washed downstream before piling up in the creek opposite his home.
“It piles up here, blocks the culvert and our area floods.”
The accumulated waste and polluted water often spill towards nearby homes, while residents and motorists travelling along Ratu Mara Rd are forced to endure an increasingly foul stench.
Mr Kelo, who has lived opposite the creek for the past decade, said the problem had persisted throughout this period.
“Now the only hope is for the Ministry of Environment to intervene and help the people living in this area.”
