The High Court in Suva has sentenced a Lami man to three years’ imprisonment for the manslaughter of a 43-year-old man on Christmas Eve in 2023.
Court records show that Inoke Qaloloma saw the victim talking to his wife, who was lying on a bench at a bus stop. Believing the victim was trying to take something from her, Qaloloma approached the pair and punched the victim.
The blow caused the victim to fall to the ground, which led to his death. He was later found motionless near Vugalei Cemetery in Lami.
The judge ordered that 24 months be served immediately in jail, with credit given for the one month already spent in custody,.
The remaining 12 months were suspended for three years.
