Ternty-one years behind bars is the sentence handed to a 24-year-old Fiji-born man who fatally stabbed his former partner after learning she planned to leave Australia to escape his abuse.
Jeremaia Tuwai was sentenced by the New South Wales Supreme Court for the murder of 21-year-old Nunia Kurualeba at their Kingswood apartment in 2023.
According to 9 News Sydney, Justice Steven Campbell found the killing was premeditated and driven by jealousy and anger after Ms Kurualeba decided to end the relationship.
Tuwai had monitored Ms Kurualeba’s phone and social media accounts and became angry over her communication with another man in Fiji.
The court was told he had previously threatened Ms Kurualeba before the fatal attack.
Tuwai was sentenced to a maximum of 21 years imprisonment, with a non-parole period of 15 years and nine months.
He will not be eligible for parole until 2040.
