AWARD-winning cookbook Kana Vinaka author Colin Chung is encouraging people to eat more fresh locally-grown food.
Mr Chung and his long-time friend and food advocate Greg Cornwall have been conducting the Kana Vinaka training in restaurants, hotels and cafés.
“I am very proud that everywhere we have been in this one-month tour we have been promoting the book,” he said.
“And we are promoting local use of our produce here in Fiji.”
The food advocates also met the Minister for Agriculture, Tomasi Tunabuna, this week alongside representatives from Tourism Fiji to discuss collaborations.
“This is in coordination with some programs that we would like to help get initiated and get more people to eat local produce and restaurants to use more local produce,” Mr Chung added.
“To make sure that we can identify an easy system where we can get it out into the hotels and into local supermarkets where we are teaching them how to eat better, not just tourists but locals as well – to lower their NCD rate.”
Mr Cornwall told other stakeholders their objective over the past 10 years was to reduce the importation of food and increase the incomes of Fijian farmers.
“This vision inspired the publication of Kana Vinaka which celebrates Fiji’s fresh local ingredients and encourages their greater use in kitchens across the country,” Mr Cornwall said.
