Just a 45-minute drive from Suva and only minutes from Pacific Harbour, Nanuku Resort is offering Fijians a luxury local getaway experience unlike any other. Hidden across 500 hectares of tropical landscape, the boutique resort combines exclusivity, adventure, culture, and world-class dining, all within easy reach for locals seeking a relaxing escape close to home.

The 37-key property, which employs close to 300 staff, has built a reputation internationally for its premium accommodation and personalised experiences. However, resort staff say Nanuku is equally focused on encouraging more local visitors to discover what the destination has to offer.

For Tomasi, who hails from the province of Nadroga, working at Nanuku over the past five years has been both rewarding and deeply personal.

“Nanuku is more than just a workplace for me, it has become my second home,” he said.

“The support from management, the owners, and nearby communities creates an environment that feels very welcoming.”

While many visitors are drawn to the resort’s luxury villas and beachfront setting, Nanuku’s appeal lies in the variety of experiences available. Guests can spend the day snorkelling, water biking, fishing, or kayaking, with fishing trips offering the opportunity to have freshly caught seafood prepared by the resort’s chefs. Inland adventures include waterfall hikes, mountain biking trails, and river excursions that showcase Fiji’s natural beauty beyond the coastline.

For local families and couples looking for a more cultural experience, the resort also offers traditional activities such as weaving, wood carving, and interactive cooking sessions.

“We want guests to experience the real Fiji through our traditions, stories, and food.”

Food has become a major highlight of the Nanuku experience. The resort was recently recognised at the Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards, receiving honours for Best Food Tourism and Corporate Social Responsibility. According to staff, the culinary philosophy centres around fresh local ingredients and storytelling through food.

Signature dining experiences include traditional “waria” cooking, where ingredients such as prawns, coconut cream, and taro leaves are prepared in bamboo over an open fire. Guests can also participate in chef’s table experiences featuring dishes such as kokoda, Fiji’s version of ceviche, alongside menus that change daily depending on seasonal produce sourced from local farmers and fishermen.

“Every dish reflects the people and communities behind the ingredients,” Tomasi said. “It gives guests an authentic taste of Fiji.”

The resort is also expanding its beverage offerings through partnerships with local suppliers including Moti Bai and Henneco. These collaborations not only enhance guest experiences but also contribute to community development initiatives supported by the resort.

Although Nanuku caters largely to the luxury market, with accommodation rates varying depending on season and villa type, management says the focus goes beyond high-end travel. Instead, the goal is to create meaningful experiences for guests, especially locals looking for a convenient but unforgettable escape.

“You don’t need to leave Fiji to experience something world-class, Nanuku gives people the opportunity to relax, reconnect, and enjoy something truly special right here at home.”
