THE Fiji National Sports Commission (FNSC) does not have any funds allocated for local coaches.

FNSC Chairman Peter Mazey made these comments in response to questions on whether it was part of FNSC’s responsibilities to pay for local national coaches.

The questions were put forward because of some queries raised by members of the public on the issue on who would be responsible for the payment of salaries for a local Fiji 7s coach if a local coach was picked for the job.

He said their short-term expert grants covered those areas that involved the development of sports officials of sporting bodies and it does not include local coaches.

“Right at the moment we don’t have any funding for local coaches,” Mazey said.

He said the only grant they got was the international coaching grants.

“Coaches have to be internationally recognised and qualified coaches and I don’t know if we have coaches locally that fall in to that category.”

He said four coaching positions had been advertised locally and internationally and then the funding would be approved accordingly in due process.

Mazey said the four advertised coaches were for both the men’s and women’s 7s rugby teams, Fiji Bati coach (rugby league) and a national swimming coach.
