The Lautoka City Council has issued a total of 872 litter fines from August 2025 to May 2026.
Council head of services Shalend Singh revealed this during the Solid Waste Management Initiative launch at Natabua High School.
Mr Singh commended Minister for Environment Lynda Tabuya for her political will to amend the Litter Act 2008 with increased fines as a deterrent measure against offenders – from $40 to $200.
“We are delighted about this as LCC is the only council which has appointed four litter prevention officers on fulltime basis,” Mr Singh said. “And they issued 872 litter fines from August 2025 to May 2026.”
Mr Singh said the Return and Earn initiative, launched by the council in January this year, had generated more than $200,000 in income for residents of Lautoka.
