MUNICIPAL councils across Fiji have issued 159 littering fines since the increased $200 fixed penalty came into effect under the Litter (Amendment) Act 2026.
Nasinu Town Council recorded the highest number of fines at 45, followed by Sigatoka and Lautoka city councils, with 39 each.
Suva City Council issued 21 fines, while Nausori and Nadi town councils issued nine and six fines respectively.
Minister for Environment and Climate Change Lynda Tabuya commended the councils for enforcing the law and urged them to maintain enforcement and public awareness efforts.
“Our laws are not decorations,” she said.
“Litter and pay. If you throw rubbish into our streets, drains, rivers or public spaces, expect a $200 fine.”
Ms Tabuya said council workers deserved respect and reminded the public that individuals were responsible for disposing of their rubbish properly.
“Your rubbish is your responsibility. Keeping Fiji clean starts with each of us. Respect our communities. Protect our vanua. Put rubbish where it belongs.”
