AN estimated $40,000 to $50,000 in cash from weekend sales is believed to be missing after intruders allegedly broke into Tebara Supermarket in Nakasi through the roof, damaging a safe and leaving the office in disarray.

Tebara Group general manager Sabid Ali said he was alerted to the break-in at about 8.30am yesterday when the branch manager called after discovering the office was locked from the inside.

Mr Ali said the money was kept in a safe along with other valuable items at the supermarket and included sales collected over Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“The door of the safe had been broken, and our office has been left in a mess,” he said.

He said information gathered at the scene suggested the intruders entered through the roof above the supermarket, where a dental practice is located, before making their way to the ground floor where the supermarket is.

Mr Ali said Police were informed of the incident and the safety of employees was his immediate concern after staff discovered the office locked from the inside.

He said the business had experienced an attempted break-in about a year ago and had since strengthened security with grills and CCTV cameras.

However, he confirmed the Nakasi branch did not have an alarm system, and the group was now looking at introducing round-the-clock security monitoring as the busy Christmas season approached.

Mr Ali said he was awaiting the Police report as investigations into the alleged break-in continued.
