VETERAN flanker Levani Botia, widely regarded as one of the most efficient jacklers in modern rugby, is on the verge of making his return to the Flying Fijians after being named in the extended squad for the inaugural Nations Champions tournament.
Botia last represented the national team during their quarter-final exit at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
Under Mick Byrne’s tenure as head coach of the Flying Fijians, the 37-year-old was overlooked for selection despite his consistent and game-changing performances for La Rochelle in the Top 14 competition.
Initially, it was believed that he had retired from international rugby.
However, three months ago, in an interview on “The Brendon McGillian Sports Channel,” Botia dispelled the rumours, declaring that he stands ready should the nation call upon his services.
“For me I’ll give the first chance to the younger players in Fiji many of them have made their debut in the national team in the past few years, but as long as they are confident in me and they need anything from me, if my country calls I cannot say no to that,” Botia stated.
His response, coupled with his consistent performances against top opposition in the Top 14, has earned him a recall to the Flying Fijians’ extended squad by interim head coach Senirusi Seruvakula.
“While this is an extended squad, all players that confirm their availability for July will be monitored before we announce the final 32-man travel squad for the tournament,” said Seruvakula.
His inclusion in the final squad will be a significant boost, particularly in the number seven jersey, where his jackling skills will be vital in disrupting opposition attacking plays and reclaiming crucial possession for the team.
Botia’s leadership, both on and off the field, will also be invaluable in guiding younger players, especially the upcoming flankers, as they learn the trade from one of the best in the business.
The final 32-member squad will be announced two weeks prior to the 4 July clash against Wales. Players from the 50-member extended squad who do not make the final cut will remain on standby as injury replacements.
