Ratu Sukuna Park is still undergoing minor repair work and does not fall entirely under the Suva City Council’s (SCC) authority, says chairman Tevita Boseiwaqa.
He clarified this when asked about the excessive littering problem at the newly refurbished park, which opened last year.
Mr Boseiwaqa is encouraging members of the public to be responsible citizens in maintaining the city’s beauty standard.
“The public should really have to learn the importance of civic pride and change the mentality and attitude.”
Mr Boseiwaqa said Menon Construction Ltd, the company contracted for the refurbishment, had not handed the park to SCC yet.
He said some minor work was yet to be finished, and once completed, the council would assume full responsibility for the maintenance and monitoring of the park.
“They (Menon Construction Ltd) have not handed over the park to SCC because they haven’t completed minor works,” he said.
“They have to install some lights on the trees within the park boundaries.
“Once they complete that, they will fully hand over the park.
“We can’t really go in and clean up because it’s still in their hands, but we will continue to follow up.”
He said despite the delay, the council kept tabs on the variation costs injected into these minor tasks.
“It was supposed to be completed before the park opened, but they said the light orders were delayed, but now they are starting to install.
“However, we are very attentive to the variation, and it has been a main topic of discussion, and we don’t want anything similar to the Lautoka swimming pool.”
