MINISTRY of Environment permanent secretary Dr Sivendra Michael says the Government plans to review the existing Litters Act 2008 and the Environmental Management Act in a bid to reduce plastic pollutions in Fiji.
While speaking at the Fiji National Symposium on Plastic Pollution yesterday, Dr Michael said by introducing the container deposit legislation, will help reduce the careless dumping of bottles, containers and other plastic products.
“There are significant plans in place headed by the Prime Minister to review the existing legislation as well as introduce regulations on the Litter’s Act,” Dr Michael said.
“Currently, the Litters Act 2008 is a parent legislation which does not necessarily have subsequent regulations, so we need to work on developing those.
“Also, under the Environmental Management Act, we have worked around waste and pollution control, which is around waste disposal permits and waste recycled permits.
“These have regulations, but it can be strengthened further, and one of the ways to strengthen it is to introduce the container deposits regulations which is around how we see the cycle of plastics moving into the country.
