THE Lautoka primary schools zone athletics team sped off to an impressive start in the 2018 FMF National Chow Games yesterday by dominating the overall medal tally at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.

Lautoka bagged eight gold medals, six silver and six bronze to lead the overall medal tally. Lautoka dominated the boys division with four gold medals, two silver and four bronze.

In the girls division Lautoka leads with four gold medals, four silver and two bronze.

Team head coach Sekove Vadei said the team had a long way to go in terms of maintaining its lead.

“We have to remain humble and maintain our focus while we go into the second day tomorrow (today),” Vadei said.

“We know that the second day will be tough and there will be tough competitions for all the districts as they will come firing but we will do our best and cross that bridge when we come to it.”

The Lautoka team is made up of athletes from nine schools.

“Most schools in Lautoka could not be part of the Lautoka team because of examinations. For us in Lautoka, winning will always be a bonus as we are here for participation and to get our kids to enjoy,” said Vadei.

The team from the Sugar City will be out to keep the lead on the second day of the 2018 FMF National Chow Games today.
