A fresh opportunity is sprouting for local farmers in the Northern Division.
It’s for farmers to start a supply chain business for fresh vegetables and fruits, inspired by the lack of vegetables there.
Damodar Group of Companies executive director Div Damodar said a restaurant within the complex had to buy fresh lettuce from Suva.
“It would be great if a farmer would be able to meet the growing demand,” he said.
This revelation underscores a critical gap which is the need for fresh produce sourced locally.
“There was no lettuce in Labasa,” he said.
Central to this endeavor is the newly established food court.
The arrival of Just Right and Bar Grills from Suva, he said have diversified dining options available to locals.
“They are bringing new flavour to our customers,” he said.
However, with two slots still vacant, anticipation looms as Damodar hints at an imminent announcement in the coming weeks.
“In two weeks’ time, we are expecting to make an announcement,” he said.
What distinguishes this development, he said was the emphasis on empowering local entrepreneurs.
“What sets us apart is that we give more space to the operators,” he said.
“They employ their own staff. Each restaurant has seven staff.”
He said the response from the public since the food court’s opening has been overwhelmingly positive.
